BiPAPs are also referred to as Bi-Level or VPAP. The acronym BiPAP means 2 Positive Airway Pressures. The first pressure protects your airway on inspiration (inhale) the second pressure protects your airway on exhalation (exhale). BiPAPs can be used to treat OSA or obstructive sleep apnea or (CSA) central sleep apnea or mixed apneas. In central sleep apnea the brain “forgets” to tell your body to breathe. BiPAP therapy resembles natural breathing patterns so it aids the brain-body connection to spontaneously breathe. Some people who cannot tolerate CPAP can tolerate BIPAP due to the dual pressures. There are two types of Bi-level devices. The first type is the traditional device with 2 pressures. One for inspiration and one for exhalation. The second type is a BIPAP Auto. In this type the pressure can vary based on the pressures you need. Your physician will prescribe which type of machine and the pressures you require to treat your sleep disorder.
